The year formal literacy and numeracy begin in earnest. Class 1 is deliberately slow at the start — we would rather spend six weeks making sure decoding is secure than race ahead and spend Class 3 repairing it.

Assessment
Continuous, with three individual reading assessments and two short written reviews a year. No formal examinations, and no ranking of children against each other at any point in primary.
