Sutradhaar takes its name from the narrator-figure of traditional Indian performance — literally, the one who holds the thread. The evening is built as a single continuous story rather than a sequence of class items, with the sutradhaar carrying the audience between six regional traditions.
Every child in Nursery through Class 5 who wanted to be on stage is on stage. There were no auditions for those years, and that is a deliberate choice: an annual day that only casts the confident children teaches the rest a lesson we do not want to teach.
The six traditions — Kuchipudi, Burrakatha, Perini, Kolattam, Oggu Katha and Dappu — have been taught over six weeks by visiting practitioners rather than choreographed by our own staff. Several of them are performance forms our students would otherwise only meet as a paragraph in a textbook.
Highlights
