Class 5

The last year of primary, and the year we start preparing children for specialist teaching. Class 5 students take on real responsibility around the school — they run the assembly, mentor Class 1, and organise the Independence Day programme themselves.

Learning outcomes

  • Writes a structured four-paragraph piece with a clear argument
  • Works confidently with fractions and decimals in real contexts
  • Plans and records a fair test, identifying one variable to change
  • Locates all Indian states and major rivers on a blank map
  • Reads a Telugu passage aloud fluently and explains its meaning

Projects

What they will actually make

  • Independence Day assembly — planned and presented entirely by Class 5
  • Water audit of the campus, measuring usage across a fortnight
  • A biography of someone in the child's own family, from interviews

Assessment

Two term examinations plus continuous assessment. Reports carry grades rather than percentages, and a written comment from every subject teacher. Children are still not ranked.
